How To Wear Trends Without Being Trendy
Hey! Did you hear? I started a new newsletter! Fashion From Scratch is all about how beautiful clothes (and accessories) are made, and the hands that make them. And it’s completely free! The first edition featuring Nicó Lee, the premier Tejano couturier of Texas, is live now!
So, like, I shop for a living; I follow dozens of amazing brands on Instagram; I consume fashion-related media; I watch Real Housewives of both New York and Atlanta; and I live and go out in Los Angeles: I’m exposed to trends constantly. With that constant exposure to constant newness, it’s kind of impossible to not take a liking to something, even if most of today’s trends are manufactured by corporations in order to instill and maintain feelings of inferiority that drive us to consume.
But, for me, it’s not enough to just kinda like something before inviting it to live in your closet. A Slow Fashion Mindset requires you to go beyond the surface and not only like something, but also understand it and its potential place in your wardrobe. Without digging deeper and questioning whether your attraction to a trend can transcend the trendiness of it (i.e. will you still like it once it’s not the newest, hottest thing?), you eventually end up with a wardrobe full of stuff you very much liked when you bought it, but don’t like very much now.
Luckily, there is a happy medium between buying every single thing that pops up on an influencer on your TikTok For You Page, and talking yourself out of buying anything on the off-chance you won’t like it in ten years.
