I’ve recently made the effort to introduce more rituals into my life.
On chilly mornings, I put my kettle on (an old fashioned one, on the stove—I don’t care for the electric kind), grind a couple of scoops of coffee beans, and French press my morning pick-me-up. In the afternoons, I walk a few blocks to pick up lunch or ingredients for dinner rather than place a delivery order. And every night, I put on a record instead of streaming music on Spotify.
I’m not doing all this to be pretentious (I swear) but, rather, in an attempt to add a bit of friction to my life. I’ve long preached about how the act of buying clothes (and discarding them) is way too easy and how to adopt a slow fashion mindset, but, I don’t often talk about a slow everything mindset. I’m not going to here, either—this is a style newsletter, after all—but, just know, I’m thinking about it.
Slow and more sustainable style is, first and foremost, about using what you have, followed by making more thoughtful purchases. But, what happens in between? Is there a way to slow down even more, say, after you’ve made that considered purchase, or while getting dressed day-to-day? And can slowing down even more help you love your clothes more?
