I’ve previously expressed my disdain for what I call “prescriptivist styling”: lists of 15, 20, even 30 generic pieces you absolutely “need” for a complete wardrobe.
And, now, I've turned the comments on, AND the notifications to actually know when I've got a comment, hence why I'm seeing and replying to this comment ten days later!
Love this, Lakyn! I’m a long time follower and YAY to comments!
I completely agree with this, I’m sick of people telling me what I “have” to wear or own… I read a great article the other day where it said the algorithm is actually someone else influencing you on your taste. they put in much more eloquent way than that, but I think they were exactly right.
I’m really really struggling to dress right now, where live in Canada. It is currently between 12° and 15° so it’s not cold enough for a coat but it’s actually not warm enough just for a trenchcoat either. I hate these in between seasons!
Also, I’m absolutely offended by your friend carrying things loosen a cotton tote. It gives me anxiety just thinking about it!
Thank you for acknowledging the challenge of a Third Piece and hot climates. I live in Arizona and sometimes I read fashion articles and it's like...must be nice to have seasons, but that ain't it.
Had to chuckle at the AARP reference. That's my employer.
Agree about jean replacement. Well, agree with it all, but jean replacement is critical. It's summer in Washington DC as I write this, where the temperature rarely drops below 90 and likes to hover at about 95 with an index hitting 100. The last thing I want on my body is denim. Thank god for white cotton and linen slacks, skirts, and dresses punched up with artistic jewelry. My go-tos from June to September.
This article feels so validating and is making me think of my wardrobe in whole new way!
Love this analysis of the “why” behind each item in these lists. Happy you finally turned the comments on!

This really resonated with me. I don't (and probably never will) own the majority of items on these lists!
