This is such a pragmatic and concise article and it makes some really excellent points. Style done right is absolutely a protective balm against marketing, because you're not going to buy something as a result of peer pressure. And I think that does go against the capitalist business model. Because capitalism wants a demographic - it really, truly does not want individuals.
Not what works for your body type or your age - ugghhhh yes!! That kind of style advice is sickeningly boring and an insult to one’s individuality as well as intelligence.
Reminds me of the 'dressing for the female gaze' tag line. And totally agree that its an insult to individuality to group us all into different classes of body types and essences. All feels very reductive imo.
I never considered body type and age as parameters until I took a deep dive into anti-fat bias and diet culture. I'm learning a cargo load about how body type is used as a weapon by the fashion industry. As an elder, I'm not experiencing age related bias so much, although periodically social media regurgitates odd-isms suggesting appropriate dress for women over 50. It's amusing. I will not be surprised if I head to hospice wearing wide legged trousers and an oversized blazer a la 1980. Because they are what's in my closet and they've taken up ample space for years.

Exactly - it wants demographics and target markets. So gross when we let ourselves see how deep this runs

Loved all of this piece!
